Year 7 students at Sale High School have been making a difference recently, making sustainable shopping bags to replace some of the million plastic bags used globally every minute.
Based on the template provided by campaigning website morsbags.com, the students have brought in old sheets, curtains and other pieces of material to re-use as a longlife shopping bag. The website provides the pattern and instructions, and the students do the rest.
Morsbags.com encourages people to get together and make bags in groups, and to hand them out to shoppers at supermarkets. Over a million plastic bags are used globally every minute, and many of them end up causing danger to wildlife, as birds and animals mistake them for food.
Textiles technology teacher Mrs Raynor said: “Making morsbags gives the students the basic skills of pattern cutting and sewing, as well as helping them understand the need for sustainability. They’ve had a lot of fun making the bags too.”
